Hiking in Gran Canaria - El arco Acoronadero
This hike takes us up the Amurga mountain which lies like a big piece of pie on the southern part of Gran Canaria, with the eastern corner in El Doctoral, the southern above Playa del Ingles and the northern corner all the way up to San Bartolome. The highest peak (Amurga) measures 1131 masl.
The mountain massif is divided by 20 deep valleys that make the landscape reminiscent of the Grand Canyon, created by rainwater for millions of years having cut its way down the mountain on its way to the sea. In the valleys there are thousands of caves. Some were used as housing or accommodation, others as cemeteries. The whole mountain is full of relics from the first people who lived out here, and those who came after.
We hike through a wild west like landscape until we reach the mythical arch El Arco Acoronadero. It is a magnificent natural rock formation consisting of two stone arches that arch towards a deep ravine.
Well visible from our arch, in the middle of the ravine, a mountain shoots up with 200 meters of vertical sides. Here, someone or some have climbed up and built 36 unique stone towers. Why someone climbed the steep mountain walls is still a mystery. There are several theories, and we will talk more about them on the hike.
