Day by day programe
The hiking trails described below are examples of some of the many trails we use. All trails are part of a network of just over 800 km of hiking trails covering Gran Canaria. We will during the travel trip choose the best and most suitable routes for the day and season.
Day 1 Arrival Transfer from the airport to the Hotel Parador de Cruz de Tejeda where after check-in we can enjoy a lovely dinner in the panoramic restaurant overlooking the beautiful Tejeda valley. Day 2 Artenara We start our hike by following the mountain ridge north from the hotel. On our way up to the pine forest, we stop to experience the weather phenomenon "mar de nubes"; a cloud cover formed when the trade wind is cooled off on its way up the mountainside. The trail winds its way along the crest of one of Gran Canaria's largest caldera and takes us through a fantastic forest landscape down to the village of Artenara, all the time with incredible views. We lunch as usual at a nice viewpoint and after that we walk down to Artenara where we have the opportunity to visit the small cave chapel, the cave house museum and take a coffee on a nice terrace. After this little stop you can choose between transport back to the hotel or to walk back. Back we take a slightly different trail through the forest and then come back out on the comb which we follow south. The hiking options are 8 or 16 km. The round trip takes a total of about 6 hours and you get a total of about 500 height meters both up and down. Day 3 Los Picos Top tour. The hike starts either in Cruz Grande where we head for one of the best preserved cobbled paths on the island "El Camino de la Plata", or a little higher up. Both leads us up to the highest peaks on the island and our lunch we take up at the "Campanario" peak in 1925 m. We then walk down and through the forest area "Los Llanos de la Pez" and out on an incredibly beautiful path that follows a ridge back towards Cruz de Tejeda. The hiking options are about 10 or 14 km. At most you can get 700 height meters up and about 400 downhill. Takes about 4-5 hours to walk. Day 4 Tejeda The trail starts outside the hotel and takes us in the south-easterly direction around and then down into the fantastic Tejeda valley and towards the small village "La Culata", we walk past picturesque white-clad farms where you still plow the terraces with oxes and wooden plows and where you get a feeling of that time has stopped for a long time. In La Culata we can stay for a coffee break and then you have the opportunity to choose between two options to move on to the village of Tejeda. On both of us we have nice views of the western part of Gran Canaria and the mythical monolith cliffs Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga. Once in Tejeda we have time to visit the village and then you can choose between getting back to the hotel by local bus or taxi or to walk up again. The hiking options are thus several, from 10.5 km to, at most about 16 km. It takes about 4-6 hours to walk. Height difference about 550 m, up and down, for the round trip. |

Day 5 Free day
Breakfast in the hotel, then free for the rest of the day. For those who want a big city pulse, take a bus down to the fine provincial capital of Las Palmas. If you would rather walk yourself, there are a number of trails that start from the hotel. You might want to take the opportunity to visit the beautiful mountain villages nearby or just relax a day in the lovely environment in and around the Parador in Cruz de Tejeda. Day 6 Pajonales This day we begin with a shorter transport down to "El Aserrador" where we begin our hike into the nature reserve Pajonales. We follow a beautiful comb overlooking the "Las Niñas" dam and the southern parts of Gran Canaria. We finish in the small cave village "El Juncal", or you can continue a bit into a subtropical valley, which we call "the forgotten valley", with palm trees, old cultivation terraces and wild almond trees and reach the village via this slightly tougher hike. The hiking options are at either 8 or 14 km, with about 700 height meters up and 450 down for the longer option. Total travel time about 4-5 hours. After the bus has picked us up again, we can stop in the small village of Ayacata for something hot or cold to drink. Day 7 Tamadaba The last day of the trip on the trip requires something extra. Tamadaba is a unique and magnificent mountain massif that extends from the sea up to almost 1500 meters above sea level. on the northwest side of Gran Canaria. Here, Gran Canaria's only virgin forest grows away from the Spanish devastation in the 16th century. There are a number of trails that go through the area and all of them are the unique flora, the meter-long beard lichen that hangs in the canary tree's branches and the moments breathtaking view of the mighty rock formations and the Atlantic Ocean. An amazing trail starts at a mountain pass and takes us out on a mountain ridge and eventually to the viewpoint Altavista. Getting out on the cliff requires some courage and lack of height. But the reward is unbeatable! Here we take our lunch and then take us down again. The hiking options are 10 or 12 km, altitude difference about 450 m. Time about 4-5 hours. (Tour) Day 8 Departure After breakfast, freetime in the morning and then transfer to the airport. |
