LAs LAgunetas- Barranco de La mina
This fantastic hiking day starts in the village Las Lagunetas, on the northeast side of Gran Canaria with an impressive view to Las Palmas and its surroundings.
Many nice trails start from this village, we usually start by hiking up towards the luch and verdant ravine Barranco de La Mina (Mining Ravine).
This gorge takes its name from the many water galleries dug by order of the Castilian Royal House, more than 500 years ago. The galleries were dug out of the mountain sides, using picks and shovels. It was one of the first engineering works carried out on the island and it was done to channel fresh water down to Las Palmas, which was under construction.
If the problem of supplying that part of the island with water had not been solved, they would have had to build the capital elsewhere. Because there is a good supply of water, there is impressive greenery and floral splendor up here all year round. Everything from almond, chestnut and walnut trees, to the rare Blue Snokewort.
We end our hike at the village's only restaurant for something refreshing to drink.
