Bandama and Montelentiscal- wine tasting
Join us for a wonderful day with wine tasting in the fertile mountain areas of the northeastern part of Gran Canaria.
Not many people know that Gran Canaria was a major wine producer in the 16th century and until the early 19th century. The culture still lives on in the old vineyards. Today, there are about 50 different wineries that produce wine in Gran Canaria.
In 1860, Europe was hit by the Grape phylloxera, that knocked out almost all of wine production. The Grape phylloxera came with grapevine that was imported from America. Since the American grapevines were resistant to the Grape phylloxera, branches from European vines to American ones were grafted to the european vinegreapes. The European wine farmers simply had to start from scratch again. The Grape phylloxera fortunately, never made it to the Canary Islands. Here they still grow the vine grapes, that once grew in Europe. Grapes such as Lista Negra, Lista Blanca, Moscatel and Tintilla are some of the grapes that are still cultivated and are now endemic to the island.
During the day we will visit two wineries with a wonderful atmosphere. During the visits, we talk about the process of winemaking from cultivation to bottling and then we get to taste the winery's wines as well as some tapas.
During the day we walks on the vineyards, and its surroundings.
Bring warm clothes and good shoes.
