Teror- Hiking around Gran Canaria's religious center.
A religious Canarian should at some point in his life make a pilgrimage to the village of Teror and the church that houses the island's patron Virgin of the Pine (la Virgen del Pino).
They walk during the night between 7 and 8 September to honor the Virgin Mary who appeared in a large pine tree for two villagers in 1481. The Basilica in Teror was built on this site and the village came to be built around it.
It is not only old pilgrimage routes that lead to Teror, but there are also countless old trade routes that meet up in the village.
Up here you also find several of Gran Canaria's drinking water springs that flow down through valleys and ravines towards the village. The rich supply of water means that the area around Teror is always green and flourishing and continues to be an important agricultural area.
We hike one of the many hiking trails that are adjacent to the village and we experience different types of nature, cave houses, cool valleys and cozy small villages during our hike.
We often both start and end the hike in Teror and when we are still here, we usually end the hike with some good tapas and something refreshing to drink in the village.
